Materials & Sourcing

Introduction

This page describes the leathers used in Zatorres footwear: what they are, how they are selected, and where they are tanned. Product pages name the country of origin only. Tannery attribution appears here.

Leather Materials

Zatorres calf uppers are selected from Italian tanneries, including Tolio and Nuova Antilope, Italy. Box calf is the base leather across the catalog, finished as smooth, pebble grain, croco embossed, or patina depending on the model.

Smooth box calf is the primary finish. It is chosen for a tight grain, consistent thickness, and stable color across production runs.

Pebble grain box calf carries a pressed grain surface. It is selected where a textured upper is required without sacrificing structural consistency.

Croco embossed box calf carries a pressed crocodile-pattern grain on the same base leather. It is selected where a pattern-driven upper is required while holding to the same grade and tannage standards.

Patina box calf is finished to develop depth and variation in tone. It is chosen when the color treatment is part of the leather's character.

Suede

Zatorres suede uppers, including suede, kid suede, and lux suede, are selected from David Oehler, Germany. These leathers are chosen for even nap, consistent weight, and color stability suited to upper use.

Exotic Leathers

Zatorres exotic leathers, including alligator, python, and ostrich, are sourced through channels that comply with CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), the international standard governing trade in protected species. Alligator and python skins originate in Florida, USA. Ostrich skins are sourced from Africa.

Exotic leathers follow a separate sourcing chain from Zatorres' calf and suede tanneries and are not covered by the tannery attribution above.

Textile Materials

Textile uppers are not part of the current Zatorres footwear catalog. This section will be updated if textile materials are added to production.

Material Selection Standards

Zatorres selects upper leathers against fixed criteria:

  • Full grain structure with no corrected grain surface on smooth calf uppers
  • Consistent hide thickness within each leather type
  • Even color saturation and batch-to-batch color match
  • Tannage that holds shape through lasting and wear
  • Surface finish appropriate to the leather type (smooth, pebble grain, croco embossed, patina, or suede nap)
  • Suede selected for uniform nap direction and resistance to uneven wear

These standards apply before a leather is approved for a model or colorway.

Provenance / Sourcing Summary

Calf leathers, across all embossments and finishes, are selected from Tolio and Nuova Antilope, Italy, for grain consistency and tannage quality. Suede, kid suede, and lux suede are selected from David Oehler, Germany, for even nap and color stability. Country of tanning on product pages remains Italy or Germany. Named tannery attribution is provided on this page only.

Closing

Material selection is fixed at the leather grade and tannage level before a shoe enters production. Questions about a specific model's upper leather are answered on that product's page.
